Match Report - 01 Apr 2012, Wadhurst United Junior Football Club Team not current beat Little Common

Third time lucky - after losing in the cup final for the previous two seasons Wadhurst United finally lifted the cup in front of a noisy crowd at the Crowborough Community Stadium. I was not a classic, most cup finals aren’t, but the lads dug deep to come from behind to beat Little Common 2-1.

Wadhurst started as favourites having previously beaten LC twice this season, however LC look to have signed a few new players since the previous meetings and battled all the way to the final whistle. Wadhurst started with the team that have played so well recently which left Sam Evans, Woody, Ross L and Aaron on the bench.

It was evident from kick off that LC were always looking to get the ball forward early for their attackers and bypassing the midfield. Their tricky forwards did cause us problems initially and it was actually no real surprise when LC took the lead. Shortly after, James cleared off the line from a LC corner. At this stage we were struggling to get to grips with the game and get the ball down and under control on a dry and bumpy pitch, however gradually Murrie, Ross J and Callum were beginning to take control. We needed either a moment of inspiration or luck to get back in to the game and when a LC defender sliced a through ball back to his keeper the only person in the ground to think that it was a deliberate back pass was the referee. Ross touched the resulting indirect free kick for Mike to blast home from 6 yards. Just before the break we created our only clear chance of the half when Murrie floated over a free kick from the right for Mike to rise well above the defenders to head in.

We knew at half time that if we could score the next goal then that would probably wrap up the game, we therefore brought Ross L on for James and shortly after Woody came on for Louis, to give us more pace and strength up front. Although we didn’t get the third goal the tactic worked as we looked much more dangerous and kept LC pegged back for much of the half. LC however had their moments, Luke looked on as a shot rattled the bar and then had Jake to thank as he misjudged a cross and Jake covering was there to head off the line. A tense final 15 minutes ensued as both teams went for it but Wadhurst hung on through 8 added minutes which the referee somehow found from somewhere. All that was left was for the team to step and collect the Cup .....

Many thanks to all of the parents, supporters etc. Well done to the adjudicators MotM which went to Mike and to my MotM which went to Callum, however congratulations to all of the squad on this achievement.
