Match Report - 25 Oct 2008, Wadhurst United Junior Football Club Team not current beat Pembury Athletic

Another fantastic performance from all of our players. Pembury proved to be stiff opposition with some good quality players. However, both Wolves and Wanderers worked hard to retain their unbeaten record.

First Match

Wadhurst United Wolves vs Pembury Athletic Galaxy

The Wolves started the game up hill and it made for a well balanced contest in the first half. Both sides had several attacks but struggled to threaten the goal. Freddie Maxfield won the Wolves a corner early on, but the boys were still not able to convert it into a goal chance. At the other end, some good tackling by Edward Roberts and Ben Fox helped to defend the line, and neither Archie Ive, in goal for the Wolves, nor Pembury’s goalkeeper had a save to make in the first half. At half time, Ben Fox, Tom Locke and Edward Roberts went off and Teddy Hall, Sam Honey and Sam Wheatley came on and provided some good play in midfield, but it remained 0-0 for a while. Then late into the half Sam Honey got the ball on the edge of the Pembury area and hit the ball beautifully with his left foot for a fine goal. Result 1-0 and cue Teddy Hall’s famous victory roll.

Second Match

Wadhurst United Wolves vs Pembury Athletic Wizards

This time the Wolves started the game playing down hill. At first they were not able to make the advantage count, but then Ben Fox took a throw-in on the left to Edward Roberts, and Edward fed the ball through to Tom Locke, who drove into the area and shot past the keeper for 1-0. Minutes later Tom Locke had the ball on the left wing, cut in and shot to score a second. And just before half time, Tom added a third to register his hat trick and make it 3-0 at the break. Pembury came back at the Wolves in the second half, benefiting from having the slope with them. Some strong tackles from Edward Roberts, Freddie Maxfield and the two Sams, Honey and Wheatley, together with some big clearances from Teddy Hall, helped to keep Pembury at bay, but finally the slope told and Pembury scored one back. But soon afterwards, the pressure was lifted. Archie Ive played the ball out to Ben Fox in his own half on the right. Ben dribbled right up to the Pembury area and cut inside two men; his shot was smothered, but Archie Ive in the centre won the ball back and fed it back to Ben, who made no mistake with his shot. Result 4-1.

The Wasps played against our own under 8 squad. They held their own against bigger and stronger players. The match was end to end stuff and ended in a very fair 3-3 draw.
