Match Report - 24 Feb 2008, Wadhurst United Junior Football Club Team not current beat East Peckham
This match marked the start of the Tournament Shield and the team worked hard to get the deserved victory which gets us of to the best possible start in the competition.
This was the 4th time we have played East Peckham this season and the experience had shown us that we were in for a tough and physical match against opponents who favour a direct style of football. It was therefore important to impose our own approach on the game and the players did this brilliantly for the first 15 minutes moving into a comfortable and deserved 3-0 lead, with goals from Ross, Michael and Callum. However, we then coasted somewhat for the rest of the half and although East Peckham were denied even a meaningful shot on goal we did not have quite the grip on the match that we would have liked.
Unsurprisingly, East Peckham were much more competitive in the second half and the match was now very even. A fourth goal from Ross appeared to have settled things but unfortunately the match became very unsettled, with some unacceptable behaviour and abuse from the East Peckham parents and this undoubtedly disrupted the team. East Peckham scored twice in a very scrappy last 15 minutes but the result was never in doubt and anything other than a Wadhurst win would have represented a huge injustice.
Everyone should be pleased with their contribution to the match and the Performance Award goes to Sam who had a particularly good game, dealing pretty much with everything that came his way. Ross was the Man of the Match and deserves great credit for maintaining a high level of performance in the face of some highly personal abuse from both the East Peckham players and parents. He might like to reflect on how his 40th and 41st goals of this season (in just 20 matches) proved to be the winning ones.
