Match Report - 20 Apr 2008, Wadhurst United Junior Football Club Team not current beat Rusthall
When you are playing in a League, it is as important to win some matches well as it is to just win other matches. That's the position we found ourselves coming into this Shield match with Rusthall. It is almost certain that the Top 2 places will be decided by goal difference and this was a great opportunity to improve ours. This was the message given to the team before the match and their perfect reply was to deliver our biggest ever win.
It is the nature of football matches that whatever the final score is, it rarely tells the story of the whole match. In this case whilst Wadhurst were dominant from kick off and scored early, it was still just 2-0 after 25 mins, with Rusthall looking to capitalise on some great long clearances from their goalkeeper. This stirred memories of our previous match with Rusthall when after a similar start we were left hanging on for a narrow win. However, five goals in the last five minutes of the half, including a memorable first ever goal for Reece, ensured that there would be no repeat this time.
The challenge for the team was now "same again" and they nearly delivered with a 6-1 result in the second half. Congratulations to Toby for a very tidy hattrick, and it was great to see Callum score. Oh yes and Ross got 8 (For those of us old enough to remember the BBC vidiprinter that's Eight!)
It should go without saying that no team wins 13-1 without everyone playing their part so Well Done and Thank You to all 12 players. It has been a very long season, but whilst other teams are clearly finding it hard to keep things going, we are continuing to improve with every match.
Last week I remarked that it was impossible to overlook Ross for Man of the Match with 5 goals so I hope he will forgive me for doing so when he has scored 8? However, even the best striker needs some support and Toby's hatrick was the best type of support and he is the Man of the Match. Similarly, Reece wins the Performance Award for adding a memorable goal to his usual strong performance at Right Back.
