Match Report - 03 Nov 2007, Wadhurst United Junior Football Club Team not current lost to Uckfield Grasshoppers
Mars - 3-0 and 1-2. Due to our large home pitches we agreed with Uckfield to play 7 aside, a first for both teams. This week also saw a slight change in teams with Joe Fuggle moving to Mars and James Maddison teaming up with Luke at the front. The result was a great all round team performance. Henry, Jonathan and Luke passed the ball around to cut through Uckfield’s defence, linking up with James for some great team goals. Joe played an inspiration game in defence working well with Ricky and Dan to hold back some fast Uckfield moves. Patrick showed his strength being able to play in goal, defence and midfield. Angus was the surprise of the day having a fantastic game in goal with a pair of safe hands and a strong clearance. Mars were unlucky to lose the second match.
Mercury got off to a slow start in their first match but defended well with Ed fitting in well with Sam B. Eventually Uckfield pressure led to a first goal and second goal and then a slightly harsh penalty led to a third with Fred having no chance from a rocket of a kick. In the second half Fred made some tremendous saves, particularly dealing with difficult corners, but Mercury were unable to create enough pressure and a loss to a well organised team was inevitable.
In the second match Mercury started much better and kept up consistent early pressure but just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net, the Uckfield goalkeeper saving them on a number of occasions. Against the run of play Uckfield scored a first and then a second goal but for the last 10 minutes of the match Mercury reverted to the early pressure and Sam F was able to force the ball home for 2-1 a nail-biting finish. Despite shots from Toby in his first match, Harry and Jonathan, on as a substitute forward, a second goal for Mercury just wasn't there.
Positives were the fighting spirit in the second half of the second match and Fred's excellent goalkeeping. Negatives were losing the ball too easily particularly in midfield and a lack of passing.
