Match Report - 20 Sep 2008, Wadhurst Junior Football Club Under 13's lost to Jarvis Brook

Oak – 0-5, 0-2

The team started very well and definitely looked the strongest, although the new formation was taking a little time to get used to. We got an early penalty when Felix was brought down by their keeper (who grabbed his foot!) - Felix stepped up to the mark but was denied his debut goal by a great save.

This gave Jarvis Brook a boost and they stepped up a gear. Although Masha, Ed and Angus put up a great fight they couldn’t keep out their strikers.

Kit Ross played an impressive debut game, making great use of the wing. Luke made some wonderful touches in midfield followed by a couple of great runs forward and crosses to Dan and Henry.

Henry played in a new role, just in front on the defence. This was a difficult position to adapt to, but he soon got the idea, covering the defence and making a couple of very close shots at goal.

Masha and Kit R deserved a joint man of the match for keeping to their positions and giving 110% effort against a strong, and sometimes over zealous opposition.

All in all Oak didn’t deserve the result, and if they build on their team play they should start producing some winning results.

Wadhurst Under 10’s vs Jarvis Brook – Sep 20th 2008

Match 1

Score 2-2

Goalscorers Joe Fuggle
Toby Wallace

The team showed a really solid performance in this match battling extremely well against a skilful team and defending very solidly both from defence and mid-field. Wadhurst took the lead through a goal by Joe Fuggle that exemplified his grit and determination. Jarvis Brooke equalized on the break before half time with a good passing move after both teams had missed some chances but the main contributor to the equal scoreline by half time was Fred Milsom who managed to pull off a couple of superb saves . In the second half Wadhurst came under sustained pressure but nevertheless took the lead through a very well taken strike by Toby Wallace who led the front line extremely well all through the match. Despite some staunch defending by Ricky Alikhani and Sam Bruce who were very well aided by Harry Latham-Coyle in midfield Jarvis Brooke equalized through a superb individual effort by one of their players who beat three or four players and shot well into the top corner from inside the box. After this equalizer, the Wadhurst team held their heads and the mid-field, in particular battled hard with James Anstee contributing well to the overall effort. This was a match that we could have won against superior opposition were it not for a moment of individual brilliance by a Jarvis Brook player and demonstrated that this Wadhurst team has got great potential for the season ahead and that they can play extremely well together.

Match 2

Score: Lost 4 – 0

A number of factors played against us early in this match. First, Harry Latham-Coyle who played an excellent holding role in mid-field in our first match had to leave and instead we put on our substitute, Kit Patterson. Although Kit played well on the wing, Harry’s absence left us short in central mid-field. In addition, Joe Fuggle started to suffer from illness during the match and had to be substituted. Since we had so subs left, we were borrowed Felix Godwin from the other under 10’s team and although Felix contributed well, all these changes unbalanced the side. To add to our woes, all our players were beginning to suffer from the heat on a rare hot day, having put a lot of effort into the first match. This Jarvis Brook side had extremely good technical and passing skills and combined well to score two early goals and then a third before half time. Wadhurst battled extremely hard in the second half and very much held their own and were unlucky to concede a fourth goal. This was a good performance despite some of the adversity described above. In particular, Jarvis Brooke showed the extent to which our two staunch defenders, Ricky Alikhani and Sam Bruce need help from the mid-field when we play teams of such skill and ability. In short we need a mid-fielder who challenges quickly and then runs back to fill in the gap left by our defenders when they have drawn out of position by a good passing side. This is something to build on.
