Match Report - 09 Mar 2008, Wadhurst Junior Football Club Under 16's beat Rotherfield
This was a magnificent victory for the team both in terms of the result and the performance, which was by some way the best that we have ever had.
It is fair to say that there has been the odd match this season when we have not played our best against the better teams, failing to get off to a good start and giving them a comfortable lead, which has then been impossible to clawback. Thus there were some grounds for concern when Rotherfield took the lead with a soft goal after just 60 seconds. However, it was obvious straight from the restart that we meant business today and we were level again in no time, with Ross L finishing well after a superb through ball from Murrie. Another goal from Ross L after a delightful set up by Callum saw us take the lead only to be pegged back again by a Rotherfield equaliser. Ross L who was getting good support up front from Josh, looked unstoppable and his hatrick saw us take a 3-2 lead into half-time but the question was, would it be enough with Rotherfield having the advantage of the slope in the second half?
It was not a surprise to see Rotherfield attack furiously for the first period of the second half but some resilient defending kept the shots to a minimum. Michael was having the game of his life as sweeper and with Jack,Sam,Campbell and Reece behind him we always looked strong. However it still needed two unbelievable saves from Tom to maintain our lead. The tide began to reverse in the last 15 minutes and Toby, Mark and Ross B all put themselves in good positions to score. It was left to Ross L to finish the job though with two late goals to give us the minimum margin of victory that we deserved.
Its always difficult to pick the award winners, when everyone plays so well so I am going to cheat and have multiple winners. Ross L had a Man of The Match Performance, but was quick to praise Michael for his own superb game, whilst Callum was put up for MoM by Craig our Vice Chairman who came to watch the game today. Therefire all 3 share the MoM Award. The Performance award was even harder with so many players stepping up on their previous form. However, by popular consent amongst the players Tom's saves were amazing and he gets the Performance Award.
